2010 Summary

By Month

Jan
Very cold month until 14th, then milder, but cooler again by 30th.
New snowfall totalled 18.5cm, making it the 10th snowiest January. 
The lowest temperature -8.7C on 7th, exceeded during the last 30 years only four times.

Feb
February cooler and drier with more foggy mornings than usual
Temperatures were not that extreme this month, the lowest min -3.4C was not particularly low 
but the highest max just 9.6C was the 8th lowest recorded here in last 55 years. 

Mar
Overall temperatures normal but a cool dry start and milder wet end to March.
The 7th lowest March min temp -6.7C was recorded on 8th.
Drier than usual, with 9th fewest rain days in 55 years here, wettest from 19th onwards.

Apr
April was the 6th mildest here although 2005/6/7/9 were even milder. 
Just one airfrost occurred on 22nd, a modest -0.6C, the 9th highest minimum here.
Rainfall just over half the normal amount, being was wet from 1st-7th and 29th-30th but dry 8th-28th. 
Only 9 years have had fewer April raindays. 

May
A fairly bright but cool first half to the month followed by a welcome bright sunny and warm spell from 
17th to 27th, especially warm between 21st and 24th with the highest max temp 28.6C recorded on 23rd.

June
A warm month, with max temps exceeding 24C from 21st to 30th. 
Mean temp was fourth highest in 55 years beaten only in 2006,2005 and 1976, 
also the highest low min temp ever recorded here.

July
Although temperatures were just above average the mean 17.6C was the 9th highest 
and just 4 days exceeded 25C.
Rainfall just 39.2mm, 78% of normal, giving the 16th lowest rainfall in 55 years, 
the highest fall was a mere 11mm on 15th. 

Aug
A disappointing month, having double normal rainfall spread throughout the month, making it the 2nd 
wettest in last 55 years here, only surpassed by 142mm in 1962. 
The 10 wetter days (>5mm) match the highest number of days in 2008, 1992 and 1956.
Cumulative rainfall Jan-Aug was 469.7mm, nearly up to the long term average of 481.4mm, making up for the 
recent drier months, and much more typical than the high totals of 2007,2008 and 2009 at this stage.

Sep
An initial 4 dry days, then rainfall slightly above average and was well spread throughout the month. 
There were 2 thunder events, a brief thunderstorm on the 7th with small hail, but on the 23rd a half hour 
spectacular lightning event from a lively slow-moving storm to my north, heading eastwards with much 
cloud to cloud and a few forked lightning strokes, but only a few rumbles of thunder. We missed the flash 
floods reported in Bilston and Darlaston (9 miles N of my station) at around this time.

Oct
A fairly wet month with 53mm rain in first 3 days, then a dry spell, and a further 24mm rain from 18th to 22nd. 
Temperatures swung from mild 1st-13th and 27th-31st with above average high max temperatures, 
then cool between 20th and 26th with depressed min and max day values, 
making mean temperatures statistically normal for the month overall. 

Nov
An unusual month, starting very mild (7th highest max temp here) but finishing very cold with 
a new record Nov min temp -8.1C on 28th. 
There were 10 airfrosts, including all nights from 24th to 30th. 
Below average rainfall, most falling between 5th and 8th. 
Some early snowfall from 27th to 30th was lower than many parts of UK, totalling only 2.6cm here. 

Dec
A record-breaking December!
A new record Mean temp of -0.5C for 56 years here (beating previous record -0.1C in 1981).
A new record lowest HiMax temp of 7.8C (beating 8.9C in 1963).
2nd lowest LoMax temp of -3.4C (only beaten by -3.9C in 1961).
4th lowest LoMin temp of -10.6C (beaten by -14.5C in 1981, -11.1C in 1963 and -11.0C in 2000).


Although statistically a dry month with 40.5mm equivalent rainfall, the 11th driest month in 56 
years, we had the 4th highest snowfall of 19.9cm in 9 days of falling snow 
(beaten only by 37cm in 1981, 28cm in 1990 and 25cm in 1961), 
and the 2nd highest record of 15 snow lying days
 (beaten only by 23 snow days in 1981).

Of the month's 40.5mm precipitation, 18.9cm actually fell as rain 
and the remaining 21.6mm as snow (from the 19.9cm snow falling).

Mean temperature only 1.5C (2.4 below normal), the coldest since 1987 and ranking 6th coldest in last 55 years of records. 
The lowest temperature was -8.7C on 7th, exceeded during the last 30 years only four times (in 2002, 1985, 1982 and 1979), ranking 15th coldest here.

New snowfall totalled 18.5cm, making it the 10th snowiest January. 

Continuous snow cover (>50%) from 6th to 15th, with 10cm of lying snow recorded on 5th, 6th and 14th.

Precipitation (including snow-melt) was 93% of normal, totalling 69.4mm with 19.2mm falling as snow before 14th, the remaining 50.2mm falling as rain after 14th.

Just one airfrost occurred on 22nd, the temperature a modest -0.6C, the 9th highest minimum here.
Rainfall was just over half the normal amount, and has only been lower in 15 years. 
The month was wet from 1st-7th and again 29th-30th but dry 8th-28th. 
Only 9 years have had fewer April raindays. 
During the dry period, max temperatures were between 14C and 20C, giving some very pleasant sunny days.

A warm month, with max temps exceeding 24C from 21st to 30th. The monthly mean temp was the fourth highest in 55 years of record held, beaten only in 2006,2005 and 1976, also the highest low min temp ever recorded here.
Rainfall was just below normal, virtually all falling 6th-9th and 13th, but dry after that. Thunder rumbled some distance away around 0200 but was closer around 1515 on 6th. Very good ripening weather for soft fruit.
