Germination of seeds, and the growth rate of plants, depend on temperature.
Different types of seed will germinate successfully within a range of temperatures, and plants will thrive better in temperatures that suit them.

Questions

How critical is successful plant growth on temperature?

Do we usually achieve suitable temperatures for successful growth in Halesowen?

How much does year to year variation of temperature affect success?

What are the crops and varieties which are most likely to succeed here?

Growth of plants depends on rainfall, or if that is too little, on the watering can!
Plants will thrive better in dry or damp conditions, according to their needs at that stage of growth.

Germination of seeds, and the growth rate of plants, depend on temperature.
As roots penetrate the soil, they experience different temperature conditions from those at the surface, and different levels of moisture, too.

Questions

How does

How does the temperature change under the surface of the soil affect growing plants?

How does temperature in the soil vary at different depths day by day, month by month and year by year?

How much does variation of temperature within the soil (on all these time scales) affect success?

Here is a list of what I have grown over the years - obviously not every variety is grown every year!  The list is mostly fruit and vegetables, although some flowers are grown on the allotment, too, to attract beneficial insects and as cut flowers. Most of these are grown outdoors on an allotment, some indoors in a greenhouse (shown in red).  Soft fruit is shown in blue.
